While wave machines, wave pools and surf machines date as far back as the 1920s, it wasn't until the late 1980s that anything came close to re-creating the thrills and challenge of the ocean. That's when Wave Loch founder Tom Lochtefeld developed 'sheet wave' technology, which he later used to create the sheet wave attractions known as the FlowRider® and FlowBarrel®, two of Belmont Park's most popular attractions.
The FlowRider® is a low profile sheet wave resembling the thrill of an ocean wave that is perfect for novices and intermediates. Its large open face allows riders to creatively express themselves with a variety of moves. The FlowBarrel® incorporates a hollow tube, curl, or barrel, along with a nice steep face, which resembles the type of hardcore waves that surfers travel the world looking for. Flowboarding (surfing the FlowRider® and FlowBarrel®) is 1/3 surfing, 1/3 snowboarding, with a mix of skateboarding and wakeboarding for fun! You may fall down, but the FlowBarrel® and FlowRiders®' padded surface will leave you springing back up and eager for another try! Come and enjoy the sun and endless waves - no experience required. Wave House Athletic Club operates San Diego's largest indoor public swimming pool. Built in 1925, the historic Plunge offers year round aquatic programs for all ages and is open daily for public use and enjoyment. With its large shallow end surrounded by an artificial grass deck featuring a Bounce House and slip n Slide, the Plunge is a refreshingly entertaining attraction for kids of all ages. The Pirates of Belmont Glow in the Dark Miniature Golf is a 'Black Light' mini golf course with a pirate theme using fluorescent murals and obstacles. This makes for an elaborate course with stunning visual effects. Pirates of Belmont is one of the new hot spots at Belmont Park because it is the only one currently in San Diego. The Magical Mystery Mirror Maze is a unique and exciting attraction the entire family can enjoy. Themed music and decor circa late 1960s and early 1970s give a psychedelic twist to a classic funhouse favorite. The 'Magical Mystery Mirror Maze' has many twists and turns that appear to be long and straight passages going in all directions - until you try to walk along one. The Vault Laser Maze Challenge is a timed event course, where the object is to expertly navigate through a web of lasers going over and under them as quickly as possible to reach the end of the maze challenge without being hit.
